Why is it so hard to live life without regrets?

i think the last sentence may be the core of the answer, because things are gray we often are conflicted with decisions. because things are gray, once we make a decision we are not really sure what to make of the outcome. unless the results are perfect, which they seldom if ever are, we look back and wonder if we had gone the other way maybe we could be better off right now. we are never content. i think this is why we regret and hope. if we were content, why would we even be alive. we keep going because we want more. im not speaking of material things, at least not exclusively, but love, understanding, knowledge, etc. as well. regret is looking to the past for more than the present has to offer, hope is looking to the future for more than the present has to offer. so i think that both may be natural instincts that help keep us going in the present. we learn from regret. we strive for results that we wont regret with hope.
