Can abandonment issues cause thumb sucking in a teen ?

I am 18 years old and have had a lot of issues with my mom since I was 7,my dad and sister have noticed that I suck my thumb when I sleep,I apperntly dont do it all the time only some times,my friends mom who I trust a lot told me that it could be abandonment issues casue my mom is not around anymore, I still see her but its really rare I have seen her like twice in 6 months,I guess I am asking if my friends mom could be right ??? Can someone please help me and give me and answer ?
