When you are arrested, the police read you your rights. Included in what they say is, "you have the right to an attorney, if you cannot afford one, one will be appointed to you." You can therefore get a public aid lawyer who can help you track down the prosecutor (probably an istant District Attorney). Other than that you could try the phone book.
